"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Mark 16:15
The first time I went I didn't know what to expect and was very afraid. But in about an hour, I was hooked. Now I feel safer there than in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I wish I could tell you about all the experiences we have had in prison but space will not allow. I will tell you that I write short stories about them and hope to someday put them in a book. My husband and I understand that prison work is not for everyone. We felt the same way a lot of people do until God broke our hearts for this ministry. We are both state certified to enter any state prison in Florida. We are volunteers with the Rock of Ages Prison Ministries out of Cleveland Tennessee. The missionary with Rock of Ages is from Stark, FL and is our leader when we go in. To date we have ministered at Tomoka CI, Lake CI, Sumter CI, and Lowell CI for Women. Of course my heart is at Lowell CI for Women. We go there every year for a revival in May and one in December. We enter the prison at 2:00pm and visit the dormitories, lock down, etc. We witness and tell them about the love of Jesus. At 4:00pm we leave for dinner and re-enter at 6:00pm for a service in the chapel that last until 8:00pm. This service consist of music, testimony, and preaching from the word of God. During the service the inmates are allowed to speak with a volunteer at any time about salvation, prayer, or counseling. One of the afternoons from 2 till 4 we have a service for the youthful offenders. These are young girls from around 15 years old to around 20 years old. They are not allowed to mix with the general population so we set aside special time for them. Seeing children in prison is really heartbreaking for me.
We are so glad God is allowing us to be witnesses in a place where some can not or will not go. It is a vast mission field in our back yards and so often overlooked. We understand that they must pay for their crime, but they still have souls. Jesus died for them just like He did for us. We have seen hundreds won for Christ. We go there to be a blessing to them but we come away with the biggest blessing of all.
